Company History
Cobia Boats was founded by a businessman in Sanford, Florida, named Harold Slama. The company’s first model was called the Sea Queen, a 17’ cuddy boat released in 1959. From then on, Cobia was known for its sport and family boats that were suitable for inland and coastal water conditions. The prices for Cobia boats were mid-range, designed to be affordable, dependable and reliable without skimping on amenities.Ashland Oil Company bought Cobia in 1965 only to sell it to industrial machinery expert Geoff Etherington a few years later. Cobia then acquired Robalo Boats in 1982 and came under the helm of the Atchley family. Manufacturing took place at a factory outside of Sanford as well as one located in Vonore, Tennessee.
In 2005, Maverick Boat Group bought Cobia Boats and immediately set about raising the bar in terms of the manufacturing processes put into each craft. By 2012, the company had revamped the entire lineup with all-new models that featured the very latest in technological advancements.
