Want to reduce the need for outboard motor repairs? Follow the below preventative maintenance tips.

Outboard Motor Maintenance: After a Boat Ride

Each time you use your outboard motor, you will want to flush out the engine when you are done. Turn on the engine, then let the water pump do the rest.

If you notice that the water pump's stream of water is not strong, however, turn off the engine and check the outflow tube. There may be debris caught inside it. If you can't find anything or if removing a lodged item didn't solve the problem, a new water pump may be needed.

Once you've flushed the engine, disconnect the fuel line. Let the engine burn all of the remaining fuel in the carburetor.

After that's done, turn off the key and turn off the battery switch (if your model has one).

Next, remove the engine cowling and look for any signs of fuel or water leaks. If you notice any, you will want to schedule an outboard motor service.

Next, wipe down the outboard motor and spray it with any anti-corrosive material, such as WD-40. Lubricate the various moving parts, such as throttle cables and the shift, to help them stay well-functioning. Put the cowling back on and put a cover on the outboard motor.

Outboard Motor Maintenance: On a Regular Maintenance

There are some outboard motor maintenance tasks that don't need to happen after every boat ride, but do need to be done on a regular basis. These tasks involve inspecting the various outboard motor parts for signs of issues. This helps you catch problems before they become a more expensive outboard motor repair.

Be sure to check:

  • The fuel line for cracks and worn spots.
  • The fuel primer bulb for cracks.
  • The clamps on the fuel line for corrosion.
  • The tank vent for any issues aspirating.
